Link of the day - NIV2011 comparison with NIV1984 and TNIV

The New International Version of the Bible is being released again in 2011 with an updated translation. In most cases, the translation has not been changed at all from the 1984 version, and in most places where it differs from the 1984, it's the same as the 2005 version. Less than 10% is actually different from previous editions.

Electoral scripture

In 2 Timothy, we read that

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

2 Timothy 3:16-17

So, for the next week, the scripture passage to meditate upon (very "useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness") is Ecclesiastes 10:2:

The heart of the wise inclines to the right,
       but the heart of the fool to the left.

A few on-line bible study resources

A few on-line resources for Bible Study:

• Reading Plan - The reading plan I'm following has 25 reading days per month, and two readings per day, alternating readings between (1) the Old and the New Testaments, and (2) the wisdom literature and the book of Isaiah.
• Bible Gateway - An online bible site with many different available translations, this site will give you up to a dozen chapters on a single web page, so you can get a day's reading without any extra navigation.
• Biblos - Another on-line bible site, this one has some excellent study aids, such as parallel readings and the original hebrew and greek with click-through concordances for word study. An excellent resource that I should be using more than I am.
• BibleMap - Online interactive maps, searchable by scripture passages.

Bible-blogging update

I mentioned earlier that I'm blogging my Bible reading this year. Those with sharp eyes may have noticed a couple of additional links up in the left sidebar here. I've linked the blog where I'm doing my daily writing. And I've added a web page for each book that I finish, reachable from a page here. So far, I have finished with Genesis and Mark. As I wrote when I started it,

It has been several years since I read through the entire Bible. There are bits and pieces that I read frequently, and others that I read far less often, and many that I suspect that I've only read once. So I'm going to read it in its entirety again this year.

This blog exists to provide me a place to comment as I read, both to give me another writing project, and to provide a little bit of external pressure to actually do the reading. (It's been several years since I read through the entire Bible - it has been fewer [probably only one] since I last started a year with the intention of doing so.)

I expect the posts on this blog to be of little value to anyone other than myself. But I know that if I take these notes in a word document, the process is likely to last two weeks. So I'm going to publish them, and, if any strike me as worthwhile, I'll link to them from my main blog.

I am going to be following this schedule. It provides readings from two different books each day. It also provides only 25 reading days per month, which should make it easier to maintain the schedule - a day missed doesn't necessarily put you behind.

Anyone that would like to join me, correct the (probably many) obvious mistakes and point out the (probably many) obvious omissions is welcome to do so - I'd love to have the company.
