Baseball thoughts for the day...
  • It's been over 2 weeks since Curt Schilling's last start, and it was 2 weeks ago today that Wells made his. Because of a rain-out, this week marked the first time that they had to replace starts. Jeremi Gonzalez got 2, John Halama got 1, and Wade Miller came back to make his Red Sox debut. Now, it's important to realize that they were facing Detroit in Detroit, and Seattle in Fenway with the wind blowing in, which makes it play like a very big park. That said, the starting pitching this week was excellent. No one failed to go 5 full innings - they averaged over 6 IP/g - and no one gave up more than 3 runs. The starters' ERA in the 7 games was 2.74, with a WHIP of 1.01.

  • The bullpen was largely responsible for the 2 losses, but the bats didn't help, scoring 3 and 4 runs, respectively.

  • The Yankees are not nearly as bad as they've looked so far. The White Sox aren't nearly as good as they've looked.

  • I don't think that carrying 12 pitchers is a good idea at any time. When you've got 3 different position players who are too hurt to play effectively (or at all) but not hurt enough to go on the DL, it significantly limits your flexibility and ability to deal with any further bumps and bruises, and is a really bad idea.
