2 out of 3, consistently, gets you to the post-season.
- Unless something radical happens, however, 2 out of 3 isn't going to win the AL East. The Rays just keep on rollin' along. Once again, the Red Sox have a better Pythagorean week, and once again, the deficit increases, as Tampa overperforms by one and Boston underperforms by one.
- One of the things that has been a frustration is the inability to put together a prolonged winning streak. By the end of May, they had already put together winning streaks of 7, 6 and 5 games. Since then, they've won as many as 4 straight only once. The pattern continued this week - win 2, lose 1, win 2, lose 1.
- They had a very good month of August. They finished at 18-9 (.667), while outscoring their opposition 170-118. And they lost 2 1/2 games in the standings in the process, as the Rays went 21-7.
- Red Sox Player of the Month: Dustin Pedroia, who hit .374/.425/.635/1.06 with 6 HR and 33 runs scored.
- Red Sox Pitcher of the Month: Daisuke Matsuzaka, who went 5-0 in 6 starts with an ERA of 2.25.
- September 1, 2008. I am officially declaring the Yankees playoff streak over.
